Albania’s rapporteur in the European Parliament voices his concern about the latest political crisis in the country

Albania’s rapporteur in the European Parliament, Knut Fleckenstein has expressed his concern about the latest developments in the country, following the decision of the opposition to abandon their mandates in parliament and the growing fears over a violent scenario in today’s protest.
According to Fleckenstein, as far as the opposition’s boycott is concerned, “this is something we don’t understand in Brussels. Politicians, members of parliament are elected to present in the parliament a better alternative to the government’s policy”.
Regarding the boycott of the upcoming elections, MEP Fleckenstein says that “I’ve also heard that elections may be boycotted, but I hope that this is only a rumour, because I think that the elections will take place anyway”.
As far as demonstrations are concerned, Fleckenstein says that “as long as demonstrations are peaceful, I think it’s within the right of the people and they should show how they feel”.
The European Parliament official stressed that not only EPP, but all political formations in the European Parliament are against the opposition’s decision not to abandon their mandates, because “members of parliament are elected to work for their voters in parliament and this should be clear for everybody”.
